El caso Heras, el positivo por EPO del único ciclista que ha ganado cuatro veces la Vuelta a España, ha generado una extraordinaria unanimidad entre todos aquellos que han dedicado parte de su tiempo a reflexionar sobre un deporte que ha edificado su historia y su credibilidad sobre conceptos tan elevados como leyenda, sufrimiento, épica. Todos coinciden: el ciclismo, el deporte desmesurado del que nos habíamos enamorado, está muerto.
Se habla de Lance Armstrong, el ganador de los últimos siete Tours; se habla de cáncer y de superación, de esfuerzo y de trabajo, y se habla, sobre todo, de EPO, de un control en 2005 en una orina congelada desde 1999. Se habla de Heras, del ganador de las tres últimas Vueltas, y se habla, inevitablemente, de EPO. Se recuerda a Marco Pantani, el último escalador, y se habla de EPO, del Giro del que fue expulsado por exceso de hematocrito. Johan Museeuw, el gran clasicómano de la última década, se retiró acompañado del oprobio, las letras EPO grabadas a fuego en su espalda. En todos los discursos hay un denominador común, tres letras mayúsculas, EPO, eritropoietina recombinante, el fármaco que lo cambió todo.
Un revolucionario fármaco
Hay quien fecha la muerte del ciclismo en 1987, pocas semanas después de que Perico Delgado chocara contra el inspirado irlandés Stephen Roche en el intento de ganar su primer Tour. Aquel otoño, dos antes de que se aprobara su uso como medicamento en Estados Unidos, los primeros envases de EPO recombinante llegaban a Europa procedentes de un laboratorio de EE UU. En One Thousand Oaks (California), en 1983, el investigador Fu-Kuen Lin había logrado aislar y clonar el gen de la eritropoietina humana, la proteína encargada de regular la producción de glóbulos rojos y de controlar la síntesis de la hemoglobina. Quedaba abierta la puerta para su fabricación industrial mediante técnicas de ingeniería genética. Aparte de aliviar el sufrimiento y de mejorar la calidad de vida de miles de enfermos de riñón sometidos a diálisis, de enfermos de sida y de cáncer sometidos a quimioterapia, y de transformar a Amgen, una pequeña firma, en un gigante de la industria farmacéutica mundial (la venta mundial de EPO alcanzó 11.000 millones de dólares en 2004), el descubrimiento de Lin revolucionó la ciencia del deporte aplicada al rendimiento, revolucionó el ciclismo.
El dopaje es una práctica cultural del ciclismo, forma parte de su esencia desde su nacimiento a finales del siglo XIX. En el pelotón, entre los practicantes de una especialidad que fueron considerados más trabajadores nacidos para sufrir que deportistas, el recurso a estimulantes, a narcóticos para resistir el dolor, se consideraba legítimo. La sociedad no consideraba tramposos a los ciclistas, de la misma manera que no se escandalizaba porque un camionero o un estudiante o un escritor recurriera a estimulantes. Los estimulantes fueron la materia con la que se construyeron los grandes mitos antes de que se llegara al conocimiento de que epopeya se escribe con EPO. Coppi, Anquetil, Gaul, Koblet… recurrieron, sin esconderlo, desde su libertad individual, desde su locura, a anfetaminas. Era una ayuda psicológica en su combate contra sus propios límites, en una naturaleza inhóspita. La sociedad lo admitió, la sociedad admiró su valor, su lucha, su sacrificio.
La EPO es otra cosa. El ciclismo, que al principio no prestó atención a los anabolizantes, a los que veía peligrosos para la resistencia, descubrió una droga a la medida. Un producto capaz de influir no ya en la cabeza, sobre la voluntad, sino en el propio organismo. La resistencia, la cantidad de oxígeno que afluía a los músculos, crecía a voluntad según la dosis administrada. Automático.
Después de un par de años de aprendizaje, en los que se reportan la muerte de varios ciclistas holandeses, la EPO, indetectable en los controles antidopaje hasta el año 2000, entró con todos los honores en el pelotón, en el que se instaló como el corazón de la gran revolución tecnológico-científica que vivió el ciclismo en la última década del siglo XX. Era posible crear superhombres. Alrededor de la EPO, la sustancia que permitía aumentar las cargas de trabajo, la planificación exacta, las recuperaciones mágicas de un día para otro, empezó a girar la vida de los equipos. El médico tomó una importancia en las decisiones con la que nunca había contado. El director podía sentirse como un jugador de videojuegos ante una consola. Ciclistas fabricados en cadena. Apretaba un botón, y el ciclista atacaba; apretaba otro, y un compañero le acompañaba. Nunca fue más fácil la táctica de carrera. Nadie fallaba. El ciclista perdió su carácter individual, su especificidad. Todos eran intercambiables, robots con casco y gafas. El escalador contrarrelojeaba, el contrarrelojista escalaba.
Al poco tiempo, el deporte del sudor y del esfuerzo, el de las metáforas hermosas, se vio invadido por palabros, pinganillo, hematocrito, pulsómetro, coulter, vatios. El ciclista, que para hacer su oficio seguía madrugando, llevando vida de monje, entrenándose en solitario o en grupo varias horas al día, en las peligrosas carreteras, lloviera, nevara o hiciera 40 grados, quedó sepultado, traicionado por un deporte que había roto con sus raíces míticas, que experimentaba una dependencia psicológica real de la sustancia mágica que lo había transformado.
En un clima deletéreo de mentiras, sospechas y trampas, se batían récords de velocidad en las grandes vueltas, récords de la hora como si se pudiera jugar con los segundos, récords de ascensión a puertos de leyenda nunca soñados. Quien destacaba se convertía en sospechoso. En carreras con el guión escrito de antemano, aquel que rompía, que ganaba en solitario, que mostraba su superioridad, no era admirado más que unos días, a la espera de un control, de un análisis, de un contraanálisis, que le bajara de la nube. La EPO sustituyó al alma. El ciclista, víctima del sistema, se quedó sin ella.
